VERSES AI… the REAL story.
Two ex Silicon Valley veterans wrote a best selling book 4 years ago outlining where the Internet and artificial intelligence were headed.
They formed relationships with the IEEE, the EU and Microsoft.
Is it a big surprise that their company, VERSES AI, is one of the best performing artificial intelligence stocks this year?
And yet still hidden from Wall Street.
Below is a summary of VERSES AI from one of the company’s earliest investors.
—————————————————————-
The PC came about 45 years ago, albeit in a very rudimentary form.
In that time DARPA had invented the ability for computers to communicate via phone lines. Remember Dial-up modems and Bulletin Board Services?
Tim Berners-Lee is a researcher at CERN in Switzerland, trying to figure out a way for him and his researcher friends to share their papers with each other without having to ship them or fax them.
Over the course of two weeks, he creates HTTP (how to create an addressable page) and HTML (how to uniformly write up a page in a shared, common language).
He gave those protocols away for free and returned to being a researcher.
It got him a knighthood from the Queen (hence, Sir Tim Berners-Lee), but he returned to being relatively obscure.
Had he developed a web browser, WordPress, or a search engine, he would have POTENTIALLY been the wealthiest person on earth by a nautical, imperial, and country mile combined.
From his creation, a bunch of juggernauts came out. AOL (the ultimate walled garden) for instance.
Web 1.0 became a unicorn farm.
Amazon (born out of nothing – selling books – their margin was Bezos’ gain), Google (born out of a garage). Too many unicorns to count.
The winners of this were not the incumbents (like AOL – Time Warner).
Then… 15 years later… Blackberry, Ericsson, Nokia (selling 1B phones a year)… the cellular incumbents…
Apple (at that point a tiny computer company on the verge of bankruptcy and saved by Microsoft) creates the iPod and then went into the phone business.
Computers had advanced to a point where they could create a tiny one. No keyboard??? weird. Add a GPS, a gyro, a camera, and an accelerometer. BOOM
Another unicorn farm was born. Web 2.0. Mobility. Uber. Doordash. Postmates. AirBnB. And so on and so on.
Now, from the internet to the outernet, comes the Web 3.0 era.
Founders Gabriel Rene and Dan Mapes called this years ago when they wrote the book on it, The Spatial Web.
AI, IoT, Edge Computing, and Blockchain are converging.
With years of deep tech experience… they saw a convergence coming. AI, IOT, Edge Computing, AR, VR (“XR”), Blockchain, etc. All the buzzword salad you can eat.
What they realized was that there was something missing… an interoperable protocol that allowed for shared context.
That was hardware and software agnostic.
Gabe had left Dan @ Cyberlab and was running a mobile company. He saw a ton of money (billions) being put into 5G. Everyone had a phone, essentially.
There were a minimal amount of new human users.
The reason why these companies were spending so much on 5G infrastructure was that the majority of projected users by 2030 (100B) were not humans but IoT connected machines.
Lightbulb moment
So they created HSML and HSTP and were (in the crypto era) trying to monetize it. Then realized that if they didn’t give it away, they wouldn’t get the adoption.
So they put the base, open protocols into a public foundation (the spatial web foundation) and the IEEE (largest standards body in the world) picked it up and declared it a public imperative.
HSML and HSTP are expected to be global de facto standards.
IEEE standardized wifi, bluetooth, ethernet, electricity and specific kinds of nuclear energy to name a few of their standards.
And so now… 200+ entities are on the working group finalizing the standard… including the likes of Meta, Alphabet, Honeywell, the European Commission (who VERSES is the lead on the EU drone project for), and the Federal Reserve.
HSML and HSTP are expected to be released to the world as the global de facto standard for contextual compute, spatial compute and as the guardrails for XAI (Explainable AI) within a year.
What did VERSES AI create?
VERSES’ creation
Unlike Tim Berners-Lee they also had a commercial mindset – they created KOSM (Knowledge Oriented Software Model), an OS on top of the proto-version of these standards.
When the standards are released, they are the only game in town.
Essentially on a lark, they built the first vertical case – Wayfinder. How do you move a worker (human or robot) through a warehouse more efficiently?
Garnered a US$26.5M contract over 10 years.
Then they got Blue Yonder (largest WMS -warehouse management system in the world) to sign on as a reseller partner.
They also got the pivotal role in Flying Forward 2020 (partnered with Microsoft) to set up the flight lanes for AI-powered drones in the EU testing the tech in 5 different cities in 5 different countries.
3 of 5 tests done so far.
At the end of this, the tech may be enshrined into EU law. They set up the guardrails for how drones operate and figured out a way to parse legal text into computable code on the fly.
That was the “magic trick” – Dentons (the largest law firm in the world that has 100s of lawyers consulting to governments, regulatory agencies and autonomous vehicle companies as to how to comply with local law) met them at a conference and realized that they might put them out of business .
Dentons, VERSES and Spatial Web Foundation announce “this is the way“.
So… Dentons, VERSES and the SWF put out a joint paper saying, essentially “this is the way“

VERSES built KOSM and had half the solution… on the other end of the planet, Prof. Karl Friston was pioneering the Free Energy Principle (essentially the E=MC2 of intelligence) explaining how consciousness and intelligence works, not just in humans but in all of nature (its a lot, I know).
The guiding principle of this is something known as Active Inference – low torque, high retort, continual computing building a knowledge graph (HSML-like) to build a contextual model of the world that updates in real time and can form beliefs and assumptions about the world.
Using sensory data to update the model (sensory can be visual, vibrational, text, numbers, anything).
They were hand-stitching their models together.
VERSES hired 15 of Karl’s protege Ph.D.s as their AI team (including Dr. Maxwell Ramstead) and then finally convinced Karl to join.
Active Inference plus KOSM is the holy grail of artificial intelligence.
Karl had the AI (active inference component), VERSES had KOSM – the ability to create real time contextual models of the world using HSML and HSTP.
They were two sides of the same coin. Heads and tails. Peanut butter and chocolate.
Hence – VERSES is zigging in the AI world while everyone else is zagging. If they flub AI itself, they still have a potential multi-billion dollar logistics business.
If they flub that they likely have the cat-bird seat on the governance of AI – the G7 tech ministers said they are looking for an open technical standard that isn’t owned by a private company.
HSML and HSTP are about to come out.
VERSES has a multi year head start and the only OS that runs on the protocols they developed.
Could a competitor emerge? 100%.
Do they have a real shot at monetizing it, unlike Tim Berners-Lee? Oh my yes.
Either vote for the company that developed the underpinnings of the 15 year tech stack shift and built their own OS on top of it plus brought the dark horse AI specialist and his team on, or don’t.
